When it comes to choosing an adopted family, there are several factors that come into play: family makeup, religion, race, location, etc. Another important factor for many birth mothers tends to be the Pre-Placement Visit. If you so choose, you can meet the prospective adoptive parents face-to-face..
The Anatomy of the Pre-Placement Visit
The When (there is nothing here speaking to when a pre-placement visit would occur)
An unplanned pregnancy can be a difficult and confusing time. Fortunately, Adoption Makes Family is here to help. We are a non-profit adoption agency with a mission to assist you – at no fee – in creating an adoption plan that meets your needs and the needs of your child. Adoption Makes Family operates a 24/7 pregnancy hotline where you can explore your thoughts and feelings with a caring and compassionate counselor in a confidential, safe, and non-judgmental environment.

If you decide that adoption is the right choice for you, Adoption Makes Family can help you step-by-step on your journey. First, we will send a packet to you either by email or mail in a confidential envelope. Once you have completed this questionnaire, we will set up personal meeting with Dean Kirschner, the Executive Director at Adoption Makes Family, and an adoption counselor. This will give you an opportunity to discuss your adoption plan in depth. At that meeting, we can also start to review potential adoptive parent profiles and, if you so choose, set up a pre-placement visit.
The Who ( Don’t see a “who”)
Selecting an adoptive family can be one of the most exciting and rewarding facets of the adoption process.
One of the benefits of working with a local adoption agency, like Adoption Makes Family, is that we are able to screen our local adoptive parents ourselves using both a detailed Application and Home Study. This allows us to more carefully and effectively match birth and adoptive parents.
The Where
This depends on several factors – most importantly, where you and adoptive parents live and how far along in the pregnancy you are. Most often, a pre-placement visit will take place in a neutral setting that will allow for open and easy conversation. The meeting will be as close to you as possible.
The Why
The “why” is pretty simple. You want the very best for your child – a loving and caring adoptive family. The pre-placement visit allows you, the birth mother, to get to know the adoptive parents on a more intimate level. Letters and pictures can only go so far. A face-to-face meeting helps birth mothers feel confident that they are making the right decision.
